Employee Recognition Ideas Drive Motivation and Job Satisfaction

Mark Twain once said, "I can live for two months on a good compliment." Employee recognition is a powerful tool in building morale, motivation and job satisfaction. A pat on the back, a personal note from a peer or a supervisor does wonders. Small, informal celebrations are many times more effective than a once a quarter or once a year formal event.

Employee appreciation and recognition are critical to achieving organizational goals. All humans need to feel appreciated. In a survey conducted by Robert Half International, the results showed that employee recognition and appreciation was the number one reason employees stay in their work environment with fair compensation being secondary.

Here are a few employee recognition ideas to consider:

Drive My BMW

Graham Weston, co-founder and CEO of Rackspace Managed Hosting, gives the keys to his BMW M3 convertible for a week to his top performing employees. This creative way to reward employees has a bigger impact than cash. He says, “If you gave somebody a $200 bonus, it wouldn’t mean very much. When someone gets to drive my car for a week, they never forget it.” The important point is pay and money does not necessarily create job satisfaction. There has to be something more.

The Extra Mile

United Services Automobile Association (USAA) provides blank “Thank You” note stationary to their workers for a program called The Extra Mile. Employees are encouraged to say “Thank You&rdquo ; to each other for the help they receive at work. The most surprising thing happened on the first day the notes were printed. They ran out! The company couldn’t keep up with the demand.

President’s Employee Recognition Dinner

Schreiber Foods, Inc. holds an annual President’s Employee Recognition Dinner. Throughout the year employees nominate each other for five award categories: leadership, quality improvement, innovation, community involvement, etc. A team then evaluates the nominations, and the winners selected. They are then announced and recognized at the President’s Dinner. The recipients receive a crystal award and a bonus.

Before embarking on creating an employee recognition program, take the time to first discover what maybe causing employees to be un-motivated. Identify and fix the de-motivators first.

Workplace Motivators Individual Assessment

Everyone is motivated by different things. The Workplace Motivators report helps clarify and identify the six inner drives people bring to the job. What motivates employees to sell, manage, service or connect with people the way they do?  This reports shows why people differ and helps you place the right people in the right jobs and motivate them to achieve more for the organization. The answers to these questions are all based on motivators. Motivators are the drivers behind our behavior -- what motivates our actions. "Greg Smith recently trained me on the DISC profile. He is a dynamic and charismatic trainer and facilitator. Greg is excellent at establishing clear directions and explaining why we're doing what we're doing. He communicated the information in a clear and easy manner for me to learn and comprehend the material. He was also very patient and flexible with his time. PERSONAL NOTE FROM THE LEAD NAVIGATOR

This is my favorite time of the year -- springtime!  I realize many of you are still in the middle of winter. Sorry! But in Atlanta, the trees are starting to bloom and it is finally warming up.

Along with the trees, the economy is warming up once again too.   After living through many recessions and downturns, similar patterns emerge.  As the economy heats up, so does employee turnover.  Make sure you read the below article and prevent unwanted turnover.

FEATURE ARTICLE

I Can’t Take It Anymore! Employee Turnover on the Increase

Employee turnover is starting to increase. Employers need to take steps and prevent losing their loyal and skilled workers now.

John is an industrial engineer. He has been working for the same employer for the past four years. He used to love his job and enjoy going to work. Now he is tired, frustrated and feels cheated. Many of those who have stuck it out with their employers during this recession are deciding it is time to update their resume and start looking for a better job somewhere else.

Over the past few years, employees have grown increasingly unhappy with their jobs and their employers for many reasons. Some feel their employers have cut back too far. Others feel their organization has taken advantage of them. Some have not seen a pay raise, bonus or promotion in years. Their friends are starting to get pay raises, why not them?

With every economic downturn I have seen, the same circle of events repeat itself. The media is sou nding more optimistic. Their friends start talking about getting better paying jobs and pay raises. Others leave for better and more interesting career opportunities.

If you are an employer, you need to evaluate your pay and benefits. Insure you minimize job dissatisfaction by providing a competitive work environment. You don’t want to be behind the power curve as the economy grows. Don’t get caught in the trap of thinking it is cheaper to find a replacement for less money.

Sure, employers can find plenty of people willing to take a job for less. But the cost of replacing a skilled employee is far more expensive than most realize.

In general, there are five important areas that lead to employee turnover and low job satisfaction.

• Poor match between the person and the job
• Poor fit with the organizational climate and culture
• Poor alignment between pay and performance
&bul l; Poor connections between the individual, their coworkers and the supervisor
• Poor opportunities for growth and advancement

Cost of Employee Turnover

The cost of attracting, recruiting, hiring, training and getting new people up to speed is tremendously more costly as well as more wasteful than most realize. Studies from the Gallup organization show employees who have an above average attitude toward their work will generate 38 percent higher customer satisfaction scores, 22 percent higher productivity and 27 percent higher profits for their companies.

BEST PRACTICES

Trip to Headquarters Company

Denon Electronics offers an all-expense paid trip to their headquarters in Japan, for the employee and their family. They have lunch with CEOs, tour the factories, and have a guided tour of the city by employees. Employees nominate the winner of this coveted award.

Staff Speaks Newsletter

The Lutheran Social Services of Mid-America have a large organization, which spans three states. They have begun a Staff Speaks article in their monthly newsletter.

They choose an employee from each of their four affiliates, and provide name, length of time employed at their organization, title, and a brief description of job duties. Then they ask them a 'fun' question each month, such as 'If you could be anyone/do anything else professionally, who/what would it be?' They take their picture, and include it with their info. This allows their staff to get to know others throughout the organization who they may not meet, or have opportunity for interaction.
