Finding Enthusiasm

One of the most elemental solutions for finding enthusiasm is to focus on the benefit you will derive from completing a particular task. In some situations it's easy to discover the benefit. For instance, you may hate wrapping presents, but you know the person you're giving the present to will be overjoyed when presented with this lovely paper-wrapped gift, and so you derive happiness from envisioning the recipient opening the present.

Other circumstances will not have such obvious benefits. If you were to find yourself trying to change a flat tire on the side of the road in the middle of a storm, it would undoubtedly be difficult to find your silver lining. Under stressful circumstances, give yourself permission to think of the wildest benefit you can come up with. Perhaps you were on your way to an event you would rather not attend. In that case, your flat tire would give you the perfect excuse to turn around and go back home.

There is some good in every situation, whether it's in the form of a benefit or a lesson to be learned (Lesson One: Never drive with questionable tires through a storm to a party you didn't want to attend in the first place). You can harness the power of positive thinking by finding that good and exploiting it, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem.

If you're having trouble summoning enthusiasm for a particular task, try to seek out someone who enjoys doing that sort of thing and ask them to partner up with you. Like smiling, enthusiasm is contagious. If you spend some time observing another person's enthusiasm, some of it is bound to rub off on you.

If you don't know anyone who might be enthusiastic about what you're trying to accomplish, try going online to look up articles or blogs pertaining to the subject. Sometimes merely reading about someone else's enthusiasm can help you find some aspect of the task to enjoy, and get you through it with a minimal amount of stress, anxiety and dread.t

"Enthusiasm releases the drive to carry you over obstacles and adds significance to all you do."  ~ Norman Vincent Peal

Developing Teams and Individuals

Being a manager is much more than overseeing day to day tasks. In order for your business to be successful, developing the individuals and turning them into a team is a main priority. You can only grow as much as your staff will allow. Weak team members can bring down the production in your company.

Develop Individuals through a Variety of Means

Before you can build a team, you have to work toward developing each staff person's abilities. Take the time necessary to make certain they have proper training to do their job. Here are a few ways you can do this:

  • Pay For Training - Find a training event that the staff person can attend. Be sure to help them understand that this training is important to their continued employment at your company. All too often, employees will blow off training events and look at the day as a free day. They might be tempted to attend only a portion of the day. It should be clearly understood that they are expected to attend all parts of the training session and provide you with a report of what they learned.

  • Let Them Be a Shadow - Allow a less experienced individual to shadow more experienced people within the company. They can see first-hand how a more experienced individual handles situations. The more experienced person should understand that it is their responsibility to fill in training gaps the shadow is missing. The shadow should understand that this is not to insult their abilities, but rather to help them be a better employee.

  • Give Valuable Reviews - Everyone benefits from receiving valuable feedback on their performance. The reason behind the review is not to point out every wrong thing the staff person does. Rather, it should give positive feedback in appropriate areas, as well as outline guidelines of where they need to improve.

Turn A Group of Individuals Into a Team

It is important to take development of your staff to the next step. You have to take the individuals and build a team. This can be a difficult task when you deal with many personality types. Here are a few ways to bring a group together:

  • Establish a United Goal - Without a well-defined goal your staff has fewer chances of becoming a team. Teams have a common goal they are trying to reach together. For example, a baseball team has the goal of winning the game. That looks very different to each member. It is the job of the coach to cast the vision of how the task will get accomplished. That is your role, be the coach of the team.

  • Get Team Together Outside of Work Hours - Most people are different when they are at work versus a social situation. Having a get together on a quarterly basis will give your staff a different perspective on those people. In particular, this can help personality types that have a hard time getting along with one another.

These are a few things that you should do to develop and lead your team. As a manager, you are more like a coach then a task master. t

Hi zubay

"Men wanted for hazardous journey.  Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness.  Safe return doubtful.  Honour and recognition in event of success."

Sir Ernest Shackleton

Antarctic explorer (1874-1922)

Ernest Shackleton placed this ad in the newspaper looking for crew members for his fateful voyage.  It is alledged he had 28 people apply for the job.  Just imagine the personality styles.  Tough, rugged and unafraid of the adventure they would soon face.  Most likely they were all "High D" personality styles.

We are testing a brand new online workplace stress analysis assessment.  I want to give away some of these for you to try out and get your feedback.  If you are interested, see the block below.  These reports are free until May 30.

Engagement and Culture Are Top Issues This Year
As the job turnover rate increases, HR departments have to turn their focus to what the core issues are. Employees that are unhappy with their jobs either find a new job or underperform. Either way, it makes for a difficult situation with business owners. For that reason, focusing on engagement needs to be a high priority.

Where is the Breakdown in Engagement?

So often, the breakdown happens because we executives are spending too much time in the office and not enough time with the employees. We are seeing the company and function of the business from the numbers standpoint. When thinking of changes, we ask ourselves if the change will increase profit.

Unless you put yourself in contact with your employees and their environment, it is hard to see what they are up against from day to day. Employees that are being asked to do more than what they can manage feel frustrated and have a poor outlook on the company.

What Happens When Employees Have a Poor Attitude About Your Company?

When you have disgruntled staff, you can bet that other people will hear about it.

With the social media outlets they have access to, an individual may choose to vent to the general public. We cannot underestimate the effect that our current and past employees can have on our branding.

Our team members understand the workplace culture and are more than willing to share that information with listening ears. This includes friends, family, and other staff. Defining and improving the culture of your business is another key thing to focus on in 2015.

What Questions Do We Need to Ask?

If we are going to solve some of the workplace problems, we have to start asking the right questions so that we can implement the right changes. With every change that you make, you should ask if it will make the environment easier to work in and enjoyable.

When the environment becomes too difficult, then employee production plummets. Staff will begin to see the employer as the problem, instead of the solution.

We also have to ask questions like, "How do we come up with simple solutions to make the work environment easier?" The Staff has enough difficult interactions in a day with customers and clientele. If they are in a difficult work environment, it will only add to their attitude toward the company.

In order for us to build solid companies and boost production, we must develop teams that work hard. For that to take place, we have to create safe and inclusive work environments that make day to day functions simple. Be the solution, not the problem.
